Essential Question How did the Landbridge Theory contribute to the spread of Native American populations?
Learning Tasks/Activities:
Ø Students will study the map labeled Migration to the Americas. Students will work in their groups to predict possible routes that could have been taken to get to North America and support their thinking with reasons to be completed on the Route Analysis graphic organizer. (DOK 3) Ø Students will view the Discovery Education video clip “Migration into North America” (Beginning to 2 min. 40 sec.). They will analyze the video using the video analysis sheet. (DOK 2-3) Ø Students will read closely the Compass Odyssey passage “Cultures” (paragraph 1). They will answer questions about the text in small group and whole class discussions (see Cultures: text discussion questions). (DOK 1-3) Ø Students will read closely ReadWorks.org “Native Americans: Who Discovered America?” They will write a personal response to the text in their notebooks (Who do you think discovered America? Explain why you think as you do?). (DOK 3) Ø Using what students have learned in the indicator tasks and their experience in the concept builder activity, they will create a list of motivations for why migrants moved, spread, and stayed in the Americas and evidence to support that motivation on the Motivations for Land Bridge Theory sheet. (DOK 2-3) Students read Lerner eBook A Timeline of History of Early American Indian Peoples. ( Pages 4-5) Use the newspaper article activity organizer to summarize text. |
It is essential for students to know:
According to the Landbridge theory, Native Americans migrated from Asia to North America across the land bridge during the Ice Age. During this time period, low temperature caused the level of water in the ocean to drop. Because the frozen water caused the level of the oceans to drop, the land that once was under water became exposed, creating a long land bridge that connected North America to Asia. By following herds or animals, hunter-gatherer people may have crossed this land bridge from Asia into North American and then continued across North America and spread into South America. The student should be able to create and recognize a map of the Landbridge theory. |
